So it appears the last few months have found me bouncing back and forth between perfecting my DRG and my SAM. Actually this seems to happen with my other jobs too, even my largely-ignored PLD. However it is even more so prevalent between the two-handers. At one point, toward the end of last year, my SAM had been all but "retired" until roaring back to life around February. I'd seriously considered doing that to my DRG around October/November.
For a while, my DRG's biggest problem was its lack of Drakesbane, which did in some part influence my leveling SAM. Another major bottleneck was the inability to 6-hit through either an Askar Korazin or an Aurum Cuirass, or a Rose Strap assuming I could stomach enough campaign. Its final problem is the need to sacrifice STR to get to the "magic number" of DEX against greater colibri (the lower-level ones). Being a mithra, it's a bit easier than other races, but I still hate having to do it. Getting around this trade-off will prove to be a costly one since it would involve N-hands and N-feet. I passed up so many of those in my previous LS last year. There's also N-head, which isn't exactly reasonable at this point.
However I've digressed from the original purpose of this post, which is about SAM and what it will take to move toward perfecting it. Let's look first at TP. Aside from a couple of swaps, this is almost done. Most notable of said changes is switching out hachiman/pole for dusk/rose, allowing me to be at 24% haste if /drg and retain my 6hit. On top of this, the chivalrous chain can go in favor of a PCC/PCA and iota ring in favor of ecphoria. This seems the most reasonable given the fact I may never see Usu feet due to the lack of a salvage group these days.
Next up is great katana weapon skills. Finish flame gorget for kasha (just a matter of beating up sharks and squid since the UFO part has been taken care of), and get rid of that dragon skull. For some reason I'm leaning toward the orc helm, though I've heard whisperings that it is trumped by a galea with STR+4 WS damage+ 3%. With the orc helm, I trade off points that could be used elsewhere. With the galea, I lose out on an excellent WS piece for my BLU. Aside from perhaps shura pants (+1) the rest is more or less superfluous. Next up is penta thrust, which could use a bit more attack. Maybe I should push toward finishing that Sarameya pop I started over the summer. I'm only about 1/3 of the way done with the tier 3's however.
Looks like the osode has a new challenger in the form of the nocturnus mail. That, and the nocturnus helm also looks dead sexy. But yeah, Fiat Lux, max medal rank, etc. Interestingly enough, phoenix has it this week so I look forward to seeing a few nocturnus bodies/heads pop up over the coming week. Unfortunately, since I'm still in wing rank, I can't get that kickass EXP ring either, but I digress.
Of course some of this could be null and void in the coming months, though it seems unlikely.

Personally, I'd shoot for Orc Helm if you can manage it for SAM. Makes a pretty good Blue Magic hat as well for stuff like Vertical Cleave, if you don't mind the Slow. For Multi-hit spells, I'd use something with accuracy on it, but that's just me. :3
As for Osode/Nocturnus getting repped, I suspect that SE will add Magian trials for Event-based gear (Homam/Nashira, Sky/Ground God Gear, Salvage Gear, etc...), as these are still "players' most prized gear." I believe Relic will get replaced by "AF3," but there's no telling whether AF and Relic +2 will pop up! xD
Yeah there are quite a few unknowns here. I do have a feeling we'll all become best of friends with that magian moogle in the coming months.
