A nice Christmas Eve laugh

And this has nothing to do with Christmas whatsoever.

Gotta love FFXIAH.

I'll have part 2 of "the frugal gourmet" up sometime after the holiday.

Merry Christmas!

Blue Mage - The Frugal Gourmet Part 1

After seeing my share of 70+ blue mages still running around in full AF and MP gear within the past several days, I've decided to make this post on BLU gear that won't break the bank. The idea for this came from Ringthree's "On the Cheap" series and will follow a similar format.

For starters, you can't be dumb, and must be willing to spend a little bit of money. Also you should be able to do some endgame events. This means having sky and sea, preferably having done CoP to the end. You should also obtain all of your spells or be close to getting them all.

BLU is a job that requires a great deal of patience and luck in terms of spell acquisition, which in turn puts many people off from it. However it can prove very enjoyable and rewarding if you stick with it. Its power is derived from its versatility and the fact that it can fill a number of roles on the fly should the situation arise. You won't have the nuking power of a BLM, the muscle of a SAM or the healing prowess of a WHM, but you CAN still assist your party in many ways. However, because of this, I do believe that a number of people try to go for the middle of the road, which hinders their performance significantly in the end. Since we tend to guzzle MP like an old car guzzles gasoline, we need to get all we can from it.

If you happen to be one of those that run around in MP gear and aren't using it for other jobs, just sell it. Or just fucking quit now. Seriously. There are enough bad ones as it is, so stop contributing to the problem. I am merely providing this as a set of suggestions to help get you from where you are to where you should be.

Now, on to the gear.

Weapons

Swords: As a BLU, your primary weapon 99% of the time is going to be a sword of some kind. We have an A- skill level in that weapon just behind PLD. We get off fairly easy in this department. One of the best BLU swords in the game is the Perdu Hanger. While this does not cost any gil, it does require a substantial amount of legwork in terms of assaults as well as the quests involved with ranking up. On top of that, it requires 40,000 Imperial Standing. The latter should not be a problem if you spend a decent amount of time meriting. Another choice is the Koggelmander, which can be obtained by gathering a few friends to blow up Tanihwa in MMM. Next up is the Beast Slayer, which is easily obtained by defeating the ZNM Cheese Hoarder Gigiroon. For the off-hand, there is the Ifrit's Blade. Piece of cake if you can solo Ifrit Prime or have a couple of friends you can team up with. Failing that, you could use a Wing Sword, but that's suited more for Cannonball which I will cover later. Also worth noting is the Erlking's blade from the update this past Summer which has a chance for some solid augments. Like FoV augments, it will require you to get your hands dirty and beat up an NM, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue with any skilled group.

Staves: Now, at some point in time, you will be called upon to assist in healing or sleeping groups of mobs (particularly dynamis or einherjar), so it would behoove you to obtain a Light Staff. You should also have a Dark Staff by now, but really that should go for anyone with an MP pool. It's also nice to have around for casting spells like Eyes on Me. The Fire Staff can be used with Cannonball (coupled with a brave grip) in addition to Heat Breath and Firespit. Also worth note is the Water Staff for regurgitation and corrosive ooze.

Ranged/Ammo: The Jr. Musketeer's Chakram +1 is nice for pulling or if you're /THF in an area such as sea or your home nation doesn't have Tu'Lia. The accuracy from the Tiphia Sting is also a nice option for multi-hit spells.

Now, on to TP. Chances are you will be subbing Ninja, and most likely your accuracy won't be capped. As such, you're likely going to be eating sushi of some kind.

Head: Walahra Turban, plain and simple.

Neck: The Spectacles are a cheap and effective boost in accuracy, and can also be employed for multi-hit spells such as Frenetic Rip. The Chivalrous Chain is a popular choice for all DD's and BLU is no exception.

Earrings: This is a pretty easy slot. The first choice being a Suppanomimi. This reduces the delay of dual wield by 5%. Even if not /NIN, the sword skill is also nice. The Brutal Earring with its 5% double attack will help you gain TP faster. The Ethereal Earring is particularly advantageous in solo situations where you are taking damage and are low on MP.

Body: Here is where things get interesting. Many would argue that this is a toss-up between the Homam Corazza and the Mirage Jubbah. The corazza offers 5 more accuracy than the jubbah and a bit more MP plus some HP as well as triple attack. The big draw of the Mirage Jubbah is the refresh effect. If you don't have either of these, then a Scorpion Harness will do. You really should be aiming for one of the first two, if not both. Any Dynamis shell worth its salt should be able to clear the four cities. If not, you're simply wasting time and experience points.

Hands: As with the other jobs that can use them, the Homam Manopolas are the cream of the crop, followed closely by the Dusk Gloves. Also worth mentioning are the Enkidu's Mittens, which provide a decent amount of accuracy but you give up the haste from the other two.

Rings: If you have other DD jobs, chances are you'll already have a Rajas Ring. If not, then a Blood Ring or an Ulthalam's Ring paired with a Woodsman or Sniper's Ring will work.

Back: The Amemet Mantle +1 and the Mirage Mantle are your best bets given that other options are a bit on the pricey side. The accuracy from the latter will also help with multi-hit spells.

Waist: The Swift Belt, with its mix of haste and accuracy, is tough to beat and worth every bit of effort. If not, there's always the Life Belt or the Potent Belt which is somewhat more balanced.

Legs: The Homam Cosciales are the creme de la creme of this slot, and with good reason. After that would be the Mirage Shalwar. If you lack either of the two, the Prince's Slops will suffice. They offer a nice bit of HP and MP plus some accuracy.

Feet: OK, now for the home stretch. Once again, a piece of the Homam set is on top. The Homam Gambieras provide everything you want in a TP slot - haste, accuracy and a boost to HP and MP. Behind these are the Enkidu's Leggings, but honestly those are more of a THF piece. After that are the Dusk Ledelsens, which have equal haste to the Enkidu boots and some HP. Anything after that is a step down given the lack of haste, but the Tabin Boots +1 could be used until something better comes your way.

Whew... So there you have the basis for a potential BLU TP build. I have chosen to break things off because the casting part is where things start to diverge. This is where the intricacies of the job begin to show. Casting gear is going to depend largely on what you're doing and what spells you have equipped in addition to your blue magic skill merits, if any. Stay tuned! :)

Mission complete.

As of yesterday evening, I am officially DONE with climbing Nyzul Isle! Our group had completed floors 6-100 flawlessly. Of course there were several times where we came stupidly close to losing. One of our final floors yesterday was a lamp floor and were 30 seconds away from timing out, but we pulled it off. When it came to do the last set of floors, I was asked to come on DRG to force a radiant lance to drop. At floor 100, we had Khimaira waiting for us, and it coughed up two radiant lances and a Denali hat for our troubles. Immediately after we finished, I raced back to lower Jeuno to pay a visit to Zalsuum to receive Expiacion and Atonement since I had enough points to break both weapons.

Huge thanks to Leylana and everyone that came and helped along the way each week. It felt great to finally be clear of this hurdle which had been a source of so much trouble the past several months.

Yet another milestone

So today was a POL maintenance which also required FFXI itself to go down as well. I log back on to see double earth weather, and KV's up. Uncontested. Ours for the taking! So as people logged in, we begin rallying the troops and proceed to claim him.

More people begin to log in and even a couple of outside people come out to help.

Our strike force is finally assembled, and our bards commence their buffing. We join up with the kite party and proceed to lay waste to the overgrown arthropod. Oh what joy that filled us seeing the loot pool once the smoke had cleared.

The one thing we came for. No more and no less.

There it was.... after several weeks of assisting others with getting this thing. Now it was my turn.

Once the others passed, I became the proud owner of an Ace's Helm. Something that I'd never imagined that I would see.

Many thanks to Devdas, Kaishen and everyone else in Beyond for helping make this dream come to fruition.

The bane of drakes

Well, today it finally happened...

All that "being dirty" and using that radiant lance in merits paid off.

So we did floors 61-80 today and for the most part things had gone smoothly up until arounf floor 78. We had an order lamp floor where we had a flayer and some other annoying mobs that aggroed us and we ultimately wound up killing them. I did get a bit worried when we saw the 10 minute warning on said floor. However, we managed to come out on top. All we got for it was a lousy brave blade. Speaking of which, I think I'll open up Atonement next.

Wyrm kings and scorpions

No, not the really big one in Altepa.

At any rate, this past Thursday, Beyond took on ye olde wyrm king Bahamut for the first time in a couple months. This was my first time doing Bv2 (having cleared Bv1 during our last Bv2 sortie in September) and it was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, he didn't put out any masks, but we came away with 2 scythes and 2 staves as well as some nice money drops.

As for scorpions, a few of us did some ODS runs last night to try and get Viewpoint (Snk) a Senjuinrikio for his up-and-coming NIN. No serket rings, but at least we got what we came for and came away with a couple of damascus ingots.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, it doesn't look like Beyond will have much going on this coming week outside of the usual einherjar and limbus. So what ever shall I do on those evenings!? Merit like a fiend most likely. I think I'll work toward pushing out DRG merits.

Speaking of DRG, I do believe I'm finally getting close to Drakesbane. After obtaining said WS, I'm debating whether or not to sell off my SAM gear and put it toward a Zahak's mail. Yes, I know, WAR and SAM are the "chosen ones" so to speak. But hey DRG is a lot more fun and you get a cool dragon that can heal you or your party members when their HP gets below a certain point! SAM has a big expensive meat cleaver and um... dancing?

Now, I'm supposedly first in line for the first Hofud that Odin coughs up. However, it's still up in the air as to who gets the first fork. A couple names came up, but they're almost never on DRG and/or have a relic in the works for another job. Given the option, I'd gladly trade off said sword to be able to get my hands on that kick-ass polearm. Not sure I'd call that equitable though. The v-fork is the third best polearm out there. However outside of a handful of situations, the hofud is just a trophy.

I know my DRG is less than "fork-worthy" in its current state, but it should be closer to that after our next couple of Odin fights. After finishing Nyzul, I intend to push out as many 80s as possible until that body drops.

Update time again!

So yesterday we were graced with the first part of the November version update which brought us a host of new items as well as a number of new notorious monsters.

A number of things caught my eye, mainly this.

Concordia
[Sword] All Races
DMG:46 Delay:268
LV 75 WAR PLD DRK SAM BLU

Interesting that SAM is on the list of jobs that can use it. Even more so is that it has the highest damage of any BLU weapon, and second highest delay. Swords of this type have been historically earmarked for WAR/PLD/DRK. Still, why is SAM on this thing? I know that before the 2-handed weapon update some SAMs used swords to do spirits within on HNM's... or something like that. I wasn't around for any of that, but I digress. At any rate, these "aern weapons" as people have been calling them are wielded by five fomor NM's in the past. It's been reported over on BG that the one pictured above is used by the Elvaan. One of the drops is a chipped scimitar, which is a 1DMG, 236 delay sword that happens to have the exact same job distribution.

Is the chipped scimitar a base of sorts? Are these "sealed" weapons similar to the mythic weapons when first obtained? The cogs of speculation turn once more, and with greater fervor!

Well, we beat Odin last night

...but we got the worst loot pool conceivable!! H.Body, D.Feet, and P.Legs. Got the dead sexy title at least.

Real progress!

As of yesterday, I am 1/5 of the way through the hellhole that is Nyzul Isle. I'll be cracking off my first Expiacion/Drakesbane/Atonement soon enough! I still need a windslicer for SAM and a death sickle for DRK at some point though that'll be a while.

Dark knight revisited

After completing STR merits, I decided I was going to do something I'd wanted to do for a while - take DRK to 75. I've been exping on it in between events and KV camps and it's currently at 45. Yeah, I know... still a way to go. I need to ding into that abyss burgeonet that rotted to me in Xarcabard the other day.

As far as merits go, I still have yet to finish divvying up my combat merits and will likely hold off on that until I finish DRK. I must be crazy leveling this since my LS has 2 stage 4 scythes in the works, both of which looking to finish by year's end.

I can't say I'd NEVER get to use it, since I've been on SAM a number of times over the past couple months, even with an amano. Lately however, my PLD has been taken out for a spin for one or two events each week since getting those speedy pants. And yes, it still has zero merits put into it. Now I really, really, really hope I don't end up having to tank Odin next time we fight him. I may have been rebuilding my PLD in the past couple weeks, but I am nowhere near comfortable with that fight. If I do end up with such a burden, I'll be forced to rage-log that night.

Over 1 million gil for such a neglegible upgrade!? No way!

Ludicrous speed! GO!

So tonight Beyond went up for a jaunt in ye olde Tu'lia and we beat on a few sky gods.

Once we murdered them for their items and seals (Byakko was spared however), it was off to go a couple rounds with our old pal, Kirin in the bowels of Ru'Avitau. Do we TP burn it as per our usual encounters? No. We do it 2004/Fisher-Price sky shell-style and kite it. I hope this doesn't become the norm. So damn boring. >_> In those situations, I'd just grab my DS and look at the screen every so often.

After we won on the first, this happened.

Photobucket

And the second one....

Photobucket

Now to hold on to this for 6 months until I can snag an HQ. Yes, I went there.

So of course this means I won't have enough points for those homam cosciales when we fight Omega this Sunday. Considering how often we fight Kirin vs Omega, and the fact we haven't seen a pair of c.legs in a while (not since I've been in the shell), and the fact it benefits every job of mine except SAM, I think it's a worthy trade-off. I can still try and cash out what I have for the hands though. :P

So apparently we're lacking people with those speedy pants to serve as runners for those situations where we kite and it drives Vandyr nuts. So it looks like every so often I'll be called upon to do the "Behemoth relay" in future meetings with ol' Chlevnik. PLD for life eh? Not my damn fault if you like putting your alliance in grave danger. Hey, some people actually get their rocks off that way.

I guess this means I'll have to give a flying fuck about my PLD and merit the damn thing. On the subject of merits, I am now 4/5 on STR merits and need 6 more to finish it off. Maybe I'll do HP after that. We'll see.

We did it again.

So we return to Valgrind for round 2 with the Dark Rider. This one actually went better than last time. We managed to take him all the way down to 1%, but in the end it wasn't enough, as the valkyries came on the scene to pick people off. The lack of manpower did us in once more, coupled with the fact he was maybe one or two good weapon skills away which didn't connect. Had we another tank or DD, things would've certainly gone in our favor.

I leave you now with the aftermath of our encounter.

What's next?

So, yesterday evening we were planning to use that Ultima pop set we've had for over a month, but the person that had it (who was a former sackholder) wasn't around. Therefore plan B involved our old pal Proto-Omega. So off to central Apollyon we went, and what do we find in the crate?

Now, one of those would've been mine, but I was outbid by a paltry 100 points. So close. >_> A brief twinge of buyer's remorse came over me for that N.body from our last Kirin but it was quickly assuaged when I get a tell saying "you're the only one needing legs with 750+ points." Or am I? N.body is a solid piece for DRG pre-Zahak's and is also nice for wheeling thrust so I'm happy. With all this time in Apollyon, the number of people needing homam is shrinking. It wouldn't surprise me if we end up doing Ultima chips for the rest of the year.

Yesterday was also a good day since I finally closed a chapter on BLU by getting the last group 2 merits I needed. I'm thinking of doing STR next, which is a whopping 360,000 limit points from start to finish.

Lately I've pondered my future in the endgame circle God forbid my current linkshell goes by the wayside. No (real) mage job? BLU, PLD, DRG, SAM? We got about 65536 of those. Sorry noroom4u. So let's look at some of the possible back-line options.

BRD - Probably the easiest trip to 75. Play songs, surf the web, rinse, repeat.... and repeat. Fuck no! On the other hand, you can be a total ass when it comes to merit parties since you're the onecontrolling the pace. I guess this is how some BRDs who are on said job 24/7 get heir kicks. "Everyone /NIN or I ain't pullin!"
RDM - Heal/haste/refresh slave. I'll pass. Though in a merit setting, you practically hold everyone's lives in your hands. Gimp DD? Let his ass die.
WHM - See RDM, minus refresh.
BLM - Blow shit up, make things go nighty-night in Dynamis. God help you getting this to 75 though. Assuming you don't live in East Ronfaure with friends. Of course that'll just mean your elemental skill will be gimped as cardinal sin by the time you reach 75.
COR - Expensive gambling pirate. Also see BRD, but with guns and dice. Not unless I get alchemy up to where I can make my own ammo. We already have a glut in those. Next!
SMN - Not your daddy's summoner from FF games of yore. Oh hey! Astral burn! Not long before SE wises up and fixes that.... then retroactively slaps everyone that did it with a big fat LM-17
SCH - You can change the weather? You must be a god! This one seems the most attractive one to me. And hey, the AoE stoneskin is even better than a BLU's diamondhide if you gear for it right!

But, this is all for another time. I need to "invest in the future" in another way by doing some more much-needed meriting first. No matter what, I'll still be a blue mage at heart.

One step closer...

So last night was a great night for Beyond having given us 9/9 Einherjar feathers. So if we win on Friday and next Tuesday, we're back in Valgrind next Friday for a rematch. Our first wave was a pack of Marids, which went down quite smoothly. Our next wave pitted us against a bloodthirsty pack of ahriman with a host of soulflayers waiting in the wings. We were also graced with the appearance of the boss for the night -- Freke.

We've had something of a sordid past with this particular boss, probably more so than the ever-annoying Motsognir. Actually it stems from a single incident a few weeks back. One night we got the big three-headed hell hound as our boss. Everyone was instructed to stand on its front paws. Simple enough, right? However, many people were everywhere BUT there, and several people kept running away like decapitated chickens when they drew hate. Despite the runners being told to stay put with varying degrees of urgency throughout the fight, it still continued, and we lost as a result. If I remember right it was so bad that some people were on the verge of being canned for that debacle as it cost us a crack at Odin. It was a touchy subject for a while, and the words "stand on the feet" were not well-received in any context. I may have left out a minor thing or two, but that was the gist of it. Thankfully last night's encounter went so much smoother and having a solid turnout didn't hurt either.

After our jaunt in Hazhalm, it was time to head off to Dynamis - Bastok to play with some overgrown turtles. Whatever AF's dropped that night, we ended up with more than one, with the exception of SCH and THF. Finally, after a year of waiting and crap lots, I finally managed to obtain my BLU pants, making me 4/6 for the set. Of course we had three more drop over the course of the run. I never thought I'd be so giddy over city AF2, but man did it feel good finally getting those!

One night in Valgrind...

Last friday's Odin sortie was a no-go due to several key people being unavailable as a result of Labor Day weekend. So we ended up doing a tier 1 because that was all one person needed for entry into Odin's chamber. However, that did not go over too well as we timed out on the boss.

Now, fast-forward to earlier tonight. It was decided that tonight would be the night that Beyond would square off against Odin for the first time. However, the iron colossus proved too much for the twenty valiant champions, but we did not go down without a fight.

We got Odin down to 7% but we ran out of time. Had we a few more people, we would've most likely emerged victorious.

We'll be back, horse-riding bastard!

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

O-DIN! O-DIN! O-DIN! O-DIN!

So after a long and arduous journey, Beyond will have its very first confrontation with the mighty Odin. Like some of us, this will be my first foray into Valgrind. I am a bit nervous though, but we are a solid team and I am confident we will be victorious.

Heeere kitty kitty kitty!

So the big white tiger put out earlier tonight.

Needless to say this totally made my day, hell even week. The other two lotters for said pants (one of them having a Maat's cap) weren't on hand so I was the next in line. Thank you once again to Beyond!

Green Eggs 'n Ham?

SAM I am, green eggs 'n ham!

Have I lost it? Nah. But apparently it seems I REALLY like slicing things with an overgrown meat cleaver. So I dinged 75 on SAM this past Tuesday after being put out of commission for two weeks by my PC breaking down. It crapped out on me not once, but TWICE. I bring it home from the repair shop the first time after it being gone for a week with a new power supply, and it goes out on me the very next day about an hour before I was to go to Einherjar that evening. Back in the shop it goes first thing that following Monday. That Friday rolls around, and I take it home again. Out again within not even 20 minutes of turning the damn thing on! I politely told the retard that fixed it to go fuck himself and took it to another shop in town. Got it back the following Tuesday and things have been fine since, but I digress.

At any rate, I've been on a real meriting kick in the past few days. Store TP merits were finished the other day, now I'm working on Overwhelm. I'd forgotten what it's like dealing with primadonna BRDs and RDMs. Also, this apparent crock of shit called "respecting the healer with utsusemi". Apparenlty I'm being too nice by going along with these, but I need the merits and as DD's our bargaining posture is highly dubious. In spite of that, I really don't mind meriting too much as long as kills go as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Have I given up on BLU? No. Though I have been sliding away from it in the past few weeks. Lately I've been re-examining it however. Have I been "doing it wrong" all this time? I dunno. If we win our next T3 on Tuesday we'll have an Odin coming up on Friday. I'll be ready to cannonball him in his backside on that day while sorting out my identity crisis.

Wednesday, July 8, 2009

Been a while.

Yes, I know I went the entire month of June and some of July with no posts whatsoever. So what have I been up to? Well, for starters I'm no longer on fairy. I've found a solid endgame LS on phoenix called Beyond and I'm digging it so far. We don't really do HNM's since the scene there is dominated by two rival linkshells (one of which is said to have the infamous "nasa" bot). We DID however claim KV today and some other LS called a GM on us for holding it which meant we had 30 minutes to kill the thing. We did manage to get the numbers out mid-day to rush it down. Of course we got completely jewed on drops though, but oh well.

Outside of endgame, I've been leveling SAM a lot lately, which now sits at 68. I figured I'd see what all the "bandwagon mania" is about and experience it first-hand. Already have my "DOMARUUUUUUU" waiting in the wings. LOL! No. I am however saving up toward a hagun and I am about 2/3 of the way there money-wise. A couple of friends and I trio the ENM every week and split the money three ways in the event that damn antlion coughs up the goods. It did last week, which made us very happy. Once I get to 75 and eventually get my hands on a haidate, it's "SAM I am" at most events or in merits, since I'm not asked to bring BLU specifically very often anymore but I do anyway since it is the most developed of my three 75's. This could very well be my final 75, but who knows? I said that about DRG, and now look what happened.

A walk on the darkside

So I've decided that my next 75 will be.... Dark Knight, which is 22 as of this posting.

And with no pocket BRD either... Oh this is gonna be funnnnn.

Guess this'll mean lots and lots of campaign, and then besieged for skilling up. I'm told it isn't as bad as it used to be leveling up, but it's still a gritty and painful road. Of course level sync and FoV make the lower levels trivial now. It's the mid to upper levels that could prove problematic.

Though I can say that there were times when leveling BLU was no walk in the park and it took me close to a year of leveling it on-and-off (yes, super slow-mo I know. Bite me!), but this was back when I was starting back up again. Of course this time I have 3 75s under my belt, just not one that has native scythe skill (like, WAR/DNC), so pre-meriting is out of the question. However, I DO have PLD, which has native great sword, which is another popular weapon of choice for DRKs. I may very well just go that route. Luckily I did hold on to a majority of my gear from when I leveled PLD, save for the haubergeon, however the NQs are worth considerably less these days, and a steal in contrast to the "era of mass inflation" when several pieces ran for upwards of 20mil.

I know I'll probably never rise to "kraken eater" status (since said weapon isn't within my reach like most people), but I already have a couple of the standard zerg pieces. I've already got a bomb queen ring, a swift belt and a turban, and I'm starting to get decked out in homam. I'm kicking myself for getting rid of the DRK panties that rotted to me during my many trips to ye olde sacrarium last summer for my swift belt. So this means I'll have to do ANOTHER "panty raid" in the aqueducts or sacrarium sometime in the future.

So now my priorities have shifted if I get lucky on bonanza, I'll opt for a v-belt on rank 2 (if I don't do so on a mule) and most likely an Algol for rank 3. Rank 1? Take the money, buy a goddamn kraken club! Not sure what I'd do with the rest, since it's bound to be an obscene amount of gil.

Speaking of paladins, I know I may fry for this, but I may just sell off my buyable PLD gear and grab my last couple AF2 pieces then bury it forever. You're probably screaming "THEN WHY THE FUCK DID YOU LOT A VALOR BODY???" Well... What can I say? AF2 are like Pokemon - gotta catch 'em all. Besides, in the past six months, I can literally count on one hand the number of times it's been seen out in the wild. I could do very well with it if I gave a flying fuck, but I can honestly say I don't at this juncture. It's just.... there for the most part. But I'll hold off on this at least until after Dynamis-Tavnazia next Friday, just in case. However I see myself going as a DD (leaning toward DRG, since "BLU fails in namis" according to Aenemy) or most likely not going at all that night since only one alliance can go in at any given time.

Back on the subject, I have a number of established DRK friends, so at least I can pick at their brains as I go along.

Well, here's hoping I don't turn "super-emo" by the time I reach 75!

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Yet another milestone.

So last night, USD did something it hasn't been able to do in quite some time -- farm Dynamis - Qufim. With that, it brings myself and a number of others to having all three dreamland slivers, thus granting access to Tavnazia!

In the words of Glenn Quagmire, "Oh yeah! Gigity Gigity!"

Closing a chapter

It's been a long time coming, but as of today it's finally done. What am I talking about? CoP is fucking DONE!!!

Yesterday, a few US members that needed the last couple of missions teamed up to bust through the pot fight in 8-3 and later on take down Promathia. I couldn't be there for the latter since my internet went out on me for a while. So today I asked if anyone wanted to come and beat up the big guy since I missed out yesterday, and Dreadlockrasta, Zaih, Scorpios, Zabeena and Shirosaki (both of whom needed 8-3 yesterday) graciously came along. Our first attempt, we straight tanked both phases and Selh'teus bit the dust at around 30%.

After regrouping for a few minutes, we decided to try kiting the second phase. That one actually went considerably smoother than before. During that last 1% I was unloading everything I had until Prishe dealt the finishing blow.

To think at around this time last year I wasn't even past promies, and didn't even have a 75 yet. Moreover, three paths and Omega/Ultima gave me so much grief I was ready to bid Vana'diel a not-so-fond farewell if I wasn't in Al'taieu by the end of last October. Indeed this victory means a great deal to me. Yes, I've heard the stories of "'Nam flashbacks" from when this stuff was still fairly new. Yes I know anyone with the manpower and half a brain can plow through CoP these days. I'll never know what it was like to beat it before ToAU came out and all the adjustmants that followed, but it still doesn't change the fact that it feels great to have it all behind me once and for all.

Come tomorrow, I'll be the proud owner of a Rajas Ring! What a nice storyline, and such a cool final battle. Seeing Promathia's final moments and the epic scenes that followed made all the headaches worthwhile.

Many thanks to the people who have lent their support along the way from tagging along on a few missions to encouraging me to keep moving forward.

So what next? Probably Divine Might and wrapping up Zilart missions followed by Bv1 and Promyvion slivers. Hell, maybe I'll even get around to the national missions!

These boots are made for walkin'....

So now I'm starting to have something to show for the months of stoneskin-whoring, SA-cannonballing and more recently Einherjar fishing. I think I'm beginning to get the hang of the third one though, except my MPKing everyone with a nasty link toward the end of tonight's sortie. I'll likely be banned from pulling after that, but I digress.

So why is this titled after a Nancy Sinatra song? After the first of our twice-weekly beatings in Hazhalm, eighteen of us from "US Proper" were off to Central Apollyon to tango with our pal, Proto-Omega. Methinks I'll save the big cannonballs till the fight's almost over. So, a few minutes and 50 DKP later, I'm now the proud owner of a pair of Homam Gambieras.

My first piece of Homam
Those are +1 AF hands, mind you!

I leave you now with the namesake of this blog.

{Blue Mage} {Einherjar} {Fishing}

So after weeks of losses to the denizens of wing 3 of the Hazhalm Testing Grounds, we've had to make a number of strategic changes. The most recent of which being that we have a BLU in both alliances doing the pulling and sleeping in lieu of a BRD. My first pull had me face-down after 5 or 6 demons all casted drain on me simultaneously and there went my shadows, at which point they ran after me to beat my face in. Someone else had to step in while I was dead/weak. When the next wave came, my second pull went slightly better as I managed to bring back what soulflayers I could and get them to sleep. Soon after, they wake up and the ones not being fought at the time decide to manaburn me. I felt like I let everyone down since I was dead or weak for a majority of our time there. I can see this is going to take a couple more runs before I'm finally comfortable in this new role. It was the second closest we had come to winning a T3. Well, there's always Thursday.

After five fucking months....

Finally got my hands on a goddamn Wightslayer after a number of time-outs and crap lots. I'm just missing a radiant lance for my DRG. Looks like I have a new goal next month - finish Nyzul Isle.

An uneventful month

Yeah I know I haven't posted anything all month. Nothing particularly noteworthy has happened to me over the course of this month other than dinging 75 on DRG the other day and obtaining a Bomb Queen ring yesterday.

Cannonball nearing completion

So last night I managed to pick up a triumph earring, and took another look at my current Cannonball setup.

That's without buffs, mind you.

Other than a few upgrades (flame ring #2, triumph earring #2, af2 legs, rutters), this puppy's almost done!

The next time I hit the 15k ampoule mark, I'll likely opt for kubira since a fortitude torque isn't the most realistic option right now unless I collect the 12 chips myself and get 17 others to beat down the jailer.

Now, if only Bastok weren't so goddamn stingy, I'd be 4/6 on the set. But we do have a Valkurm coming up on Tuesday, so there's a shot at head+1 and mirage mantle (loltowngear).

I'll look into an HQ wing sword or jagdplaute another time. I've yet to see either one pop up on the AH.

Here's to blasting sky gods and other big beasts even bigger new assholes!

Return of the Mog Bonanza

So, as promised, SE brings us the Mog Bonanza once again to commemorate the 7th anniversary of FFXI. Hard to believe it's been almost seven years since the game went live in Japan. That's longer than most marriages last these days.

The Rank 1 list looks virtually identical to last year's minus the HQ abjuration bodies (most of those are ass save Shura +1 and blurple-berk anyway). Wait, what the hell is Joyeuse doing in Rank 2!? Yeah I know it's a great weapon for those that can use it, but a slew of other options present themselves. I like how they just added coupons for the iceland AF2 pieces. Would've been cooler if those coupons could be traded in for their +1 counterparts. Yeah, I know, fat chance. Also, thank God they're offering more than just a lousy exp scroll for rank 5.

Here's what I'd see myself getting.

Rank 1: I'd take the money, though I'll be damned if I know how to spend close to 100 mil (which is what it may come out to, or even more with everyone and their mother buying marbles). Well, it would cover the cost of alexandrite for a Tizona, but then there's all the other legwork involved. I'd likely dump it into power leveling a craft. I'd likely just buy off all my desired non-rare/ex gear first THEN go from there.

Maybe a Morrigan's robe since I have zero inclination to set foot in a salvage zone given the horror stories I've heard about the microscopic drop rates down there.

Rank 2: My gut tells me homam corazza.

Rank 3: Homam cosciales or the cash if it's a substantial amount. I'm not about to contribute to the goddamn hauteclaire population. Come June, we'll see another swell of those in the next iteration of the "Gimp/confused/wtf" topic on BG.

Rank 4 & 5: Damned if I know. Probably a behemoth hide or khroma ore. I'll just hang onto it until the prices go back up again after the market becomes saturated like with behemoth hides last year.

Last year I only got maybe 3 or 4 exp scrolls if I remember right.

Potential future spells

If you've poked around in AltanaViewer, you would see that there are a number of unused spells in the "Blue Magic" section that have been there for a good while. A number of these are redundant considering what we have already, but let's take a look at a few of them.

Goblin Rush: Three-hit attack + knockback. Could be a mid-level upgrade from Bludgeon or something.

Final Sting: Bees love to use this when they get low on HP. Possible single-target version of Self-destruct.

Dream Flower: Used by those damn mandragoras while leveling in the jungles and during a part of Apollyon. Upgraded Sheep Song probably, not that it would need one.

TP Drainkiss: Like our MP Drainkiss, this comes from leeches. This one could potentially revolutionize how the job is played. However, don't expect this one to be cheap MP-wise, and it wouldn't surprise me if it weren't available until the 60s or 70s.

Aerial Wheel: Ranged stun move used by orcs. We get melee and magic-based stuns, so why not a ranged one too.?

Pandemic Nip: Used by the gnats in the past areas. Single-target damage plus transfers enfeebles to its target. This could be an incredible solo spell, especially against imps with that damn amnesia.

Airy Shield: A move used by those of the ahriman family. Makes caster immune to ranged attacks. For us, it would probably reduce damage by a decent amount, but not all the way to zero.

Magic Barrier: Another ahriman move. BLU version of Rampart would be my guess.

Bubble Armor: Sahagin move that applies shell. No telling what tier of shell that would be in comparison to the white magic spells.

Shell Guard: Defense boost move used by Quadavs. Upgrade to Cocoon, perhaps?

Everyone's Grudge: Staple Tonberry move featured in several of the past FF games. Since the damage from the attack is based on a person's tonberry hate, it wouldn't surprise me if this functioned similar to the Paladin WS Atonement, where enmity played a part in damage. With all these defensive spells, this could work as an interesting BLU tanking spell.

Mortal Ray: Doom? Not no way, not no how!

Now let's look at some possible job traits.

Demon Killer: Would mean not having to drop 400k+ on a sword just for killing imps (yes I know that price tag can't be helped).

Assassin: This would do wonders for BLU/THF, but it would be worthless on any other sub.

Triple Attack: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! No. The refresh from AF2 body or Morrigan's robe would make this god-like for TP. Homam Corazza grants it to jobs that would not have this ability otherwise. However this trait would be viable for someone who's on a long waiting list in their limbus group and may not be seeing a homam body anytime soon, or someone that may not have sea yet.

Fast Cast: OK now this one sounds a bit more realistic than the last two. I know of a few blue mages who have been wanting this one for a good while.

Here's hoping that these don't all suck, but given SE's track record I'm not holding my breath.

You have PLD too?

Well the past couple days have certainly gone very nicely. For starters, we can now move into tier 3 of Einherjar starting Monday, and to top it off, I had enough amps to snag me a ritter gorget for heat breaths and also for use on PLD. Speaking of which, last night in Xarcabard, we had not one, but TWO surcoats drop. Oh, and we stomped a mud hole in Dynamis Lord's ass and walked it dry.

The funny part? Myself and the other person that got the first surcoat have never used our paladins for much of anything LS related. Even funnier is I get a tell this morning from someone that does dynamis with us saying "you have pld too?" and I was like "yeah it's my only other 75" and they were like "I thought you had brd and blu". My response: my brd is at level 1 and forever shall it stay. I'm sorry, but I just cannot see myself doing that. I'd rather fucking chug battery acid.

Fenrir Prime soloed by a BLU.

So it isn't just the RDM's having all the fun.

During my web surfing, I happened to come across this gem.

Exploring further into that page, it looks like he does Roc, Scitalis, Lord of Onzozo among others on BLU as well. I'm curious as to what kind of gear setup and merits this guy's using.

Whitebox ahoy!

I'll let this say everything.

So I jumped the gun, but it was "damned if you do, damned if you don't" with the whole anticipation factor.

Here's what I have to look forward to.

SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX SEX!!!

Oh shit.... sticky keys.

Another obligatory "dorp" post

Dynamis - San d'Oria was good to us last night AF-wise. I managed to walk away with a pair of these babies.

Now I just need the Bastok and Windurst pieces, then I'll be 5/6 on BLU relic. Then I think I'll work on the PLD pieces next.

The fallout continues

Seeing all the recent news, and a very interesting discussion at LBR has really got me thinking on a few things.

If you've been following the news surrounding FFXI in the past several weeks, you've likely heard about the 550 "witches" burned at the stake, and the rest either getting warnings or temp bans for the infamous duping exploit. The initial hysteria seems to have died down, but a number of people are still ill at ease as to whether SE will come back around with another wave of bannings. A number of linkshells that may have lost their leaders from this, be they guilty as sin or completely in the dark as to what was going on yet banned anyway, have eithere reformed or just folded altogether.

While I believe that a number of these were justified, I also believe that there are quite a few out there that were innocent and/or completely clueless that were affected. This, and the fact that this kind of thing has gone on for over a year before being fixed, and then turning around and taking such extreme measures only proves how detached SE really is from its playerbase in contrast to other MMO companies. Look at Blizzard with WoW or even Cryptic/NCSoft with City of Heroes/Villains. But in SE's defense, they also have a number of language and culture barriers to contend with. In North American fan communities, you have a handful of large community sites, often serving as hubs for information, like Alla, FFXIclopedia, BG etc. Now, in Japan it's a different story. The community is spread out over several much smaller websites and blogs, much like this one. Not just for this game, but for a number of others as well.

Then there's the long-standing issue of the disparity in service between Japan and the rest of its userbase in other countries. Granted, some of this cannot be avoided given resources and the aforementioned differences in the two fan cultures. If you ask me, they're really no different from Sega in this aspect.

What do I mean by that? Phantasy Star Online, and Phantasy Star Universe. For the uninitiated, PSO was spread across three different consoles and two different PC versions, each with separate servers. In all incarnations of the game, especially PSO Blue Burst, there were quests and items that never saw the light of day on the North American servers. In the Dreamcast, GameCube and XBox versions of PSO, Japanese, North American, and European players could play together. However this ended in Blue Burst with the Japanese getting their own servers apart from NA/EU users, which would happen again in PSU.

Going back to the matter of duping and cheating, all incarnations of PSO had some kind of duping. We're not talking about monomates here, but some of the most powerful items within the game. And with the console versions, there were even weapons that were far stronger than what were available by normal means thanks to cheat devices. Of course, Sega did very little to stem the proliferation of these items outside of banning anyone that removed an item that wasn't yet available online out of their storage.

Another thing about how SE treats their fans. Counter-Strike got its roots as a Half-Life mod. Valve liked what they saw, and picked up the mod and the two guys responsible and it evolved into a standalone game. More recently, there was the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix which came out not too long ago. Where did the music come from? None other than OCRemix. There are surely a number of examples of game developers adding fans to their payrolls as a result of work that they [the fans] have done based on their favorite games by that company. On the subject of Capcom though, where do you think all the robots from Mega Man 2 all the way up to 8 came from? Fans. Hell, they even pulled from outside Japan with the aid of Nintendo Power in 1992 for the development of Mega Man 6. Back in 2003, there was a 3D remake of Chrono Trigger by a group of fans that was turning out quite well. What did they get for their troubles? A cease and desist letter from SE in 2004.Remember that? Now THIS is how a Chrono remake should've been done!

I think that deep down, this is yet another interesting look into human nature itself. As much as many others including myself would like to believe the contrary, we're all self-serving and a tad bit greedy in some fashion. I know there are a number of people who in light of the horrid drop rates and the fact nothing had been done about it for over a year despite knowledge about it would've just said "fuck you" and kept on duping. Although the people that knowingly participated in this feel justified in their actions, does that necessarily make it right? No. On the flip side, is it right that this had an impact on a number of "hapless victims" and they have no recourse? No. But this really isn't a black and white issue for either side here.

I really feel that SE should re-examine how it handles things in this game including their response to something else like this when it does happen again, and not have such disregard for its fans. Otherwise its userbase for not only this game, but its "successor" will fall like lead after the initial novelty wears off.

Einherjar, Ultima etc.

So last night was certainly a boon for US as we finally managed to clear a chamber in ine-hair-yar (I swear, that's the correct phonetic pronunciation, not "ine-her-jar" as so many mistakenly call it), putting us one step closer to Odin.

Triple dorp from Ultima was also sexy. We emerged from the 4th floor of central Temenos with a cerebrum, a heart, and a claw going to three very happy mages.

Lately I've started coming /THF to a few events and the results have been pleasing thus far.

I need to hurry up and get palace access in sea so I can get vertical cleave and the other indoor sea spells. Maybe then I'll get up the motivation to plow through the rest of CoP and get my goddamn rajas ring.

Last night

...was the most incredible night of my life.

Well, not really.

However......

Thank god no one else was lotting.

The obligatory victory pose after it went into my inventory.

THANK YOU US!

Now I just need those pesky city pieces. The only piece in the set IMO that is truely useless is the feet. Even the bazubands have their use for spells containing dex mods (hysteric barrage) and the +5 mind can't hurt for those healing spells.

Next big item on my shopping list is a vulcan's staff, then probably a gigant mantle after that. I believe the latter is an ENM drop, but I've no clue as to the difficulty or the drop rate as I haven't tried it yet. Must be prettytough if it goes for 700-800k on Fairy.

Now, if we can just get a few more Omega pop sets and start pushing through the homam....

New year, new chapter

So I have decided to quietly part ways with the "disturbing consortium" as I call it, and have now become part of the long-standing Ultimate Synergy linkshell.

So before shouting "why why why?" I would like to make it abundantly clear that I did not leave out of disdain for anyone. You'll get part of the answer to the million gil question in previous posts. Best of luck to ADx this year.

So, what have I been doing with my new crew the past week? So far it's been a total sky farmfest since most events were put on hold due to the holidays, which have come to a close.

If the damage > MP effect on Tizona procs often enough and has a decent return, I may reconsider obtaining one since I may actually one day have the resources to upgrade that thing!

Oh, and if you're on Fairy, have 3mil and need a pair of byakko pants, look US up!

Happy new year!
